![]() When I auditioned for the show, and I figured out I had a chance of maybe getting on, I literally pulled from all of my inspirations, from growing up as a kid and learning about pop culture and really delving into fashion. Where did the idea originate of combining Black culture, fashion and a genuine sense of fun? It felt like everyone was waiting to see what you wore on the runway every week. But I was like, "You are Symone, and you know how to make it work for you." I think staying out of my own way and molding the challenges to me and making it work for me. What was most challenging throughout the competition? A lot of the competition is mental, so as long as you are confident in what you brought, and you come with a sense of who you are - I say all that to say I had a lot of expectations, but then absolutely none at all. You're just gonna have to figure it out, Symone, because things are gonna be thrown at you that you never in your life encountered, but you have to know how to get around it. I told myself, "I don't know how you're gonna do it, come hell or high water, but you're gonna make it to the top four. What were your expectations when you walked into that werk room? All the fans that are rooting for me and the ride or dies, I want them to be like, "Yeah, she f****ng did that." It's constant emotions all the time.Įveryone, of course, wants to win. But then overwhelming in the sense that I wanna make myself proud, and I wanna make everyone proud. In that way, I have a certain peace of knowing that I deserve to be where I am. ![]() I went through this show and did what I wanted to do, and I showed exactly who I was, whether it was good or bad. It feels, yes, overwhelming but also there's kind of a calm that comes with it. See, now, you look like you got some sense goin' on over here. Symone! I had you pegged as the winner from the first episode. ![]() Symone follows Season 12 champ Jaida Essence Hall, who was crowned in her living room during the early months of COVID. Fans watched from their cars at a nearby drive-in. The finale was filmed inside an empty Ace Hotel in Los Angeles because of COVID-19 concerns. Kandy Muse edged out Rosé during "Work Bitch." In the second round, Symone bested "Gottmik" during "Gimme More." Host RuPaul spun a wheel to decide who would lip sync in the first round. Finalists Gottmik and Rosé, who grew up in Houston, got the chop during earlier lip syncs. It’s a phrase so popular that RuPaul even added a twist to All Stars 5, bringing in fan favorite lip syncers to test the show’s contestants. ![]() Through all of these varying formats, twists and shenanigans, Drag Race fans made it a habit to dub certain contestants as “lip sync assassins” - queens so good at the art of lip synching, that they manage to slay their opponents almost every time. And on All Stars 4, RuPaul even introduced the queerest March Madness-style tournament of them all, the Lip Sync LaLaPaRuza. Kicking off in season 9, the final four queens had to start competing in a Lip Sync For The Crown in order to take home the coveted $100,000. Starting in All Stars 2 and in each iteration of All Stars since, lip syncs served to congratulate queens on a job well done, and to offer them a chance to win further cash prizes in a Lip Sync For Your Legacy. With new seasons, though, come new formats. On a traditional season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, performing in a lip sync is not where you want to be fighting for a chance to stay in the competition, the Lip Sync For Your Life has become a pop culture phenomenon all its own, and one that fans of the show look forward to with every airing. ![]()
